dye the background a color?

I would like the background to be gray in the moment before the dialogue. so as to make the characters stand out
I was trying with the tint command but it always remains active, also coloring the subsequent backgrounds. I also noticed that it overwrote some subsequent backgrounds skipping them... how can I do it? thanks
